On gender binaries

There is a strange phenomena occurring today, whereas the feminist movement has shifted much of the public opinion on the side of women’s equality. Whether or not this has been fully realized is another question. Nonetheless, the momentum certainly seems to be on the side of feminists. With this came an accepting tone of women bending into traditionally male roles and their accompanying identity signifiers (outfits, language, etc.). Ironically, the gender binary for men has remained reinforced.

For example, a recent clothing ad featured a boy putting on pink toenail polish. There was significant backlash, particularly from Fox News. One commenter made an interesting point: Would this backlash have occurred if a girl had been playing with trucks in the mud?

The obvious answer is no.

So then, why? Why are gendered roles being reinforced for men as they disintegrate for women? Maybe it is some sort of Defense Mechanism meant to hide a desire to join in the inhibitions.

Why is a genderless world so scary?

  • The Law, Frederic Bastiat

Life, faculties, production — in other words, individuality, liberty, property — this is man. And in spite of the cunning of artful political leaders, these three gifts from God precede all human legislation, and are superior to it. Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place.
